The way the cookie crumbles
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Had some problems contacting the fifth and final winner for the Bake Rattle and Role Contest (wrong contact info, ineligibility, not free to bake, etc), but the cookie crumbled, so to say, rather neatly in place in the end. Here then, is the final list of those who managed to win a place in the free baking workshop to be conducted by Dr. Baker, the CEO of the Malaysian Institute of Baking (MIB):

Congrats, and hope you enjoy the class tomorrow which btw, starts at 9.00am sharp. Please don't be late. I'll be there as well, and probably get my hands dirty too. Below is a map to MIB.

Finally, something unrelated, other than the fact that it's also a contest - a teaser for fans of American pop rock band OneRepublic. The boys will be in town for the 2008 MTV Asia Awards, so to commemorate their arrival here on our shores, we'll be giving away 10 copies of their debut album Dreaming Out Loud.

Find out how you can win a copy either in tomorrow's post, or more likely on Monday, depending on whether I would survive tomorrow's exertions, y'know, after all the kneading, breading and baking. Sigh, the things I do for you guys. ;-)

Doing good, and being an all-around champ
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Good Thursday, all. Firstly, an apology. I realise I've been neglecting this space here of late, but trust me on this, I had a valid reason, and it's actually (if you look at it from a certain angle) a good thing for you. What the lack of updates here mean to you is that things are moving (or we are attempting to move things) behind the scenes.

Well, behind the scenes for you. I'm in the scene(s), fighting tooth and nail with bureaucracy, as well as a s..l..o..w server, and pulling my hair out figuring out how to find the funds to get some of the more ambitious projects we've planned earlier this year off the ground. Nevertheless, it's a good thing for you. ;-)

To make up for my recent absence here, this will be a long post.

It may contain some good stuff, a list of names of contest winners, a few contest announcements (one organised by Seagate, the other by us, naturally) and some drivel, but all in all, a long post.

Will you spare time to do good?

First up, a straight-up question. Will you lend a helping hand if we ran more community service projects? The sort of projects where you don't get anything in return other than a warm feeling inside because you've made a difference in someone else's life? Will you make the effort to get up on a Sunday morning, at a God-forsaken hour, just to travel a distance, to make some less fortunate kid's day?

Now, would you?

See, a while back, I called a friend of mine VJ (thanks, mate!), who's an active member of the Rotary Club, to ask him if the group would be interested in running a joint project with the AMBP.

VJ, being the helpful soul that he has always been, decided to get me in touch with Kavita, the President of the Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur (RCKL).

Recently Kavita wrote to me (e-mail below), asking me if AMBP members would be interested in taking part in one of RCKL's main community service projects. My answer: I'm interested, and I hope the members are, but I would have to find out from the members themselves. Hence, this post.

So, do let me know if you're psyched by this. Leave a comment (a simple 'yes!' would do). Thanks.

Seagate's 'Precious Memories' Competition

The good folks over at Citrine One have alerted us of a competition Seagate is organising, one that may be of interest to you - bloggers - particularly those who have an eye for a good video/photo shot.

The 'Precious Memories' Competiton, which starts today is open to resident journalists, photo-journalists and professional bloggers, and all you need to do is upload an image or a vid clip at the competition microsite, one that captures a memory that stands out in your life, a precious memory.

Winners will be determined by popular vote and will receive either a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive and a cash bonus. The winning entries for Malaysia will then move on to the next stage - the Seagate Precious Memories regional competition - for a chance at winning even more great prizes. Heck, even voters get to win some cool stuff.

Don't see why you shouldn't give this one a shot - details at http://seagatememories.com/malaysia.

Other stuff

OK-OK, I'm almost done. Just want to remind those who took part in the Mariah Carey contest to look in their e-mail inbox - you know, just in case you managed to win something.

Also, for those who took part in the Bake Rattle and Role Contest - watch out for the winners list first thing tomorrow. We'll also buzz you to confirm your attendance, so get your handphones charged and ready.

Oh, and there's a new contest, details tomorrow.

That's it. I'm done for today.

Bake, rattle and roll
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

After the energy-sapping Smashin' Gathering (more on the event tomorrow), I decided to take a short break, but I'm back, and I've got a factory-sealed message (y'know, to preserve freshness) that will be of interest to baking enthusiasts.

Along with our dearest sisters from CloveTWO, and friends from the Malaysian Institute of Baking (MIB), we are serving up a treat unlike any we've offered before. I'm talking about a free baking workshop!

The session will be conducted by the MIB's CEO Don Yong aka Dr Baker, and under his expert guidance, five lucky AMBP members (and a friend each) will learn how to make:

  • Sweet buns (with red bean, tuna and hot dog fillings)
  • Moist chocolate cake
  • Chocolate fudge &
  • Chocolate chip walnut cookies

The complete itinerary:

Bakin' with Dr Baker

Date:

July 5 (Saturday)

Venue:

Malaysian Institute of Baking, 11 Jalan 52/B, New Town, 46200 Petaling Jaya

Time:

9am - 1pm

Agenda:

8.30am

Registration

9.00am

Briefing on the recipes and a little theory on baking

10.00am

Baking session with Dr Baker

12.30pm

Q&A session & group photography (souvenirs to be presented to participants)

1.00pm

End

Now, class is in session - here's what you have to do to make the grade:

Step 1: Post up the image below on your blog, then link it (the image) to either http://clovetwo.com/contest/bakingworkshop/ or http://allmalaysia.info/ambp/editor/permalink.asp?id=44.

Step 2: On the same blog entry, tell us why we should pick you to attend the free baking workshop. Be as funny, as dramatic or as crazy as you want. We love crazy people. Note that entries will be judged based on originality, creative expression and entertainment value.

Step 3: Send the link to your blog entry as a 'Comment' here, on this Editor's Note post (Bake, rattle and roll). You've got until July 3.

And that's it. Easy as er, pie.

Cool Caption Contest: Cartoon Chatter
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Mornin' all. Busy day, so here's a quick post for the Evangelion fans out there.

We've got 50 in-season double passes for Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone to give away, and all you have to do to win one is caption an image from the movie. Details can be found on our Contest page.

You don't have to make funny faces...

...or put on awful costumes.

...or poke your eye out

...to win this one. In fact, it's so darn easy, you might as well give it a shot.

OK, that was awfully cheesy, but hey, I really gotta run so don't mind me; just join the contest.

Update: Contest deadline has been extended to July 4, 2008

Winning formula
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Pop quiz, hotshot: What does Mariah Carey's E=MC² stand for? If you immediately answered "Emancipation equals Mariah Carey to the second power" then you're obviously a fan of this gifted songstress, 'cos, I certainly wouldn't have known what it meant if I didn't Wiki it first. (If you answered along these lines, then all I'll say is, hhmmmm.)

It's highly unlikely that Carey is a secret admirer of Einstein's theory of relativity, but you've gotta admit, she knows a formula that works.

Which is why she's in the 'elite chart company', as Billboard Magazine puts it, sitting prettily alongside the big boys, Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Actually, she's already surpassed The King for the most Hot 100 No. 1s, and is now gunning for the boys from Liverpool.

So, yeah, you could say that E=MC² adds up to an aural success. Here's a taste of (or a listen to) success, then:

Since we love a success story, we want you to try searching for your winning formula, one that will allow you to take home - what else? - Mariah's album E=MC².

All you need to do is spot the difference between the two images below. At first glance, the two images appear to be identical. But looks can be deceiving. There are actually five differences between the two. Can you spot them?

Image on the left taken from http://www.cardcow.com/28954/albert-einstein-at-beach-1945-celebrities/.
Right, from www.simonperry.org/.

OK, sheesh, we're kidding! Here's what you really need to do:

 1) Answer the following questions:

  • Name the title of Mariah Carey's latest album.
  • What does the equation in the title stand for?

2) Post up this pic:

3) Write a little (could be 5 words, could be 500 - it's up to you) about Mariah Carey's latest album.

all on your blog. Then send the link to that particular blog post as a comment here.

You've got until June 20 to complete the above tasks. Winners will be notified by e-mail.

More stuff to win

You don't have to have Einstein-level smarts to win an AMBP contest. And what's even more great is that there's plenty of opportunities to win something here. If you don't believe us, check out:

Participate in this contest to be in the running to take home a cool Sony Ericsson W660i mobile phone, as well as Hancock movie merchandise! Winnings come with free passes to the movie.

Here’s your chance to win tickets to Genting's latest extravaganza Dreamz (worth RM260 each). Very cool show, this.

Get invited to AMBP’s second gathering and watch the smashin’ The Incredible Hulk on the bigscreen.

Well, then. Whatcha waitin’ for? Get clickin’.

So, have your Dreamz come true?
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Well, has it? For those of you who took part in our Fulfilling Dreamz Contest, scan down the list below, and see if you can spot your contest post there.

Pic 'borrowed' from http://www.spotlight.com.au/vip/vip_club_winners

If it is, it means you've won yourself a double pass to watch a magical show with men and women prancing around in tights, riding bikes and playing with big white cats. It also means that you've just witnessed my super powers. Heh.

If you're in the Klang Valley, come visit us on the 7th Floor of Menara Star, Phileo Damansara II to collect your pass. Look for me (my extension is 1118) or my colleagues, Ivy (1106) or Andy (1104).

Alternatively, you could come look for us at the Smashin' Gathering to collect the prize.

Note that we will have to verify that you are who you say you are, so bring along your NRIC, and don't forget to update your MyStar ID with valid info.

If you can't find your blog below, it's probably for one of the following three reasons:

  • You have yet to register the blog - the very one on which you posted your contest entry -  with us
  • I couldn't find your contest post on your blog
  • I haven't got down to processing your entries

Anyway, don't fret if your blog isn't listed. The contest is NOT, as yet, over, so there's plenty of time to press your case.

Without further ado, here's the first 35 winners. Congrats!

Quotes of the day
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

I made plans to watch the new Indy movie last night but was prevented from doing so by the madness on the roads that followed yesterday's shocking announcement.

I was irritated, angry and just. wanted. to get. home! Sigh.

This is madness!

If I were a superhero, I'd be called Super Santa
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

No, not because I look the part. More to do with the fact that I'm naturally inclined to make people happy with gifts. (heh!)

Here, let me demonstrate my powers. See this pic?

Pic taken from http://www.letsgodigital.org/

It's a Sony Ericsson W660i. And it could be yours, all yours, if you put in just a little effort to make Will Smith as Hancock look good on your blog.

See what I did there? That upward curl of your lips, that nice warm feeling that's starting to swell from your gut? Well, that's me, ALL ME!

...could be your breakfast, but heck, let's just pretend it's me, kay?

Either way, if you're wondering who's Hancock you can view the clip below   to get you up to speed. If you're wondering who's Will Smith, sir/ma'am, I can't help you.

Now, going back to the mobile phone. All you need to do has been detailed on our Hancock Contest page, so click-click. Once there, you might notice that if you miss out on the Sony Ericssons, you could win some other fabulous stuff - more proof of my super powers. Ho, ho, ho!

To further strengthen my case, let me just make a happy announcement: Those of you who took part in the recently-ended Marooned with Rihanna contest, as well as the on-going Fulfilling Dreamz competition, please look in your inbox. If it says, "You've Got Mail", it just might mean "You've Got Gifts".

Oh, and in case I forget, we're having a gathering, one where 1) we'd be handing out more gifts in the form of movie tix (more proof of my superpowers!), and 2) you get to witness a Microsoft representative demonstrate how you could add some zest to your blog with their online tools.

Now, with great power comes great responsibility, so excuse me while I go do my thing. Ho. Ho. Ho.

p.s The Editor is feeling a little unwell today.

To gather again
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

If you don't already know - we're having our second gathering. This time around, the gathering is hosted by Cinema Online and Microsoft, and will include two talks and a movie screening.

Since we can't fit every Malaysian blogger in KL into the cinema hall for the screening, we will need you to tell us in advance (by RSVPing to ambp at allmalaysia.info), if you're interested to attend the gathering and/or watch the show.

The Smashin' Gathering will take place on Sat, June 14, 2008 from 11.30am onwards. The special screening of The Incredible Hulk starts at 2.00pm. Let us know soon, by writing to us at the aforementioned email address, providing us with the following info:

  • Your MyStarID (the one with which you used to register your blog here)
  • Your Blog(s) on AMBP
  • Your Contact No.

The connection here at our booth at the Popular Book Co.'s Bookfest is extremely slow, so I'm signing off. More tomorrow.

AMBP at Bookfest@Malaysia
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

The Star Online will have a booth of its own at Popular Book Co.'s Bookfest, touted as "the biggest book fest in South East Asia", which is happening from May 24 - Jun 1, 2008, at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, KLCC.

That effectively means that the AMBP will also be there!

We'll be giving out goodies at the event, in a sort of lucky draw, and all you need to do to get your hands on these goodies is show proof that you're a member of AMBP (with our blog buttons on your blog or blogs); yes, it's that simple! If you're not a member of AMBP, you can sign up at the event itself - but no fake blogs, please.

Some of the prizes on offer include passes to Dreamz (the Genting - City of Entertainment extravaganza, passes worth RM260 each), automotive guide The Orange Book (courtesy of TOC), our very own Merdeka @ 50 booklets (very informative and cool, this) and movie premiums.

The Orange Book

Since we have a number of portals that fall under the parent umbrella of The Star Online (such as CloveTWO.com, Kuali.com, eCentral and Star-Jobs), we'll have to follow a schedule to give prominence to each of these portals.

As such, AllMalaysia.info and the AMBP has been slotted in on May 24 (Sat) and 30 (Fri), and Jun 1 (Sun), so come on these dates if you're a blogger. We'll be in Hall 5 (Lots 5A16 & 5A17).

The book fest, themed "Reading Empowers", will open at 10am and will go on until 10pm, daily. Admission is chargeable at RM 2 per ticket. FREE admission for students 18 years & below and senior citizen 60 years & above.

Contests for the sloths among you ;-)
