We're gathering again + AllMalaysia.info Contest + Other stuff
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

On a dazzling display of logic that'll warm the cockles of Spock's heart/pointy ears, we've joined forces with fellow geeks United International Pictures, Red FM, Outpost Cafe & Hobby Centre, and Gophers Technologies to beam up 100 bloggers onto Studio V at 1.30pm on May 1, 2009 for AMBP's 2009 gathering, which we've dubbed First Contact @ Studio V.

The event will be a sort of homage to helmer J.J. Abrams' new enterprise Star Trek (a reboot of the original TV/movie series) and we're hoping that it would allow you to geek out to the max, even if you're a non-Trekker.

Naturally, it will culminate with a Special Advance Screening of the much anticipated movie, a whole week before the local official release (May 7). So if you're invited to the event, you automatically get a pass to the exclusive Sneak Peek scheduled at 7pm on the day.

But don't worry. We've also cracked our heads (yes, even our Klingon warrior Sashi, whose head isn't very easy to crack), thinking up of ways to keep you busy prior to the screening.

The first of these activities takes place on cyberspace. It's an Online Contest for you restless souls who just want something to do (and win) while waiting for the day of the event to arrive.

On the day itself, we will have a Treasure Hunt (prizes of which are sponsored by Gophers Technologies), interviews with bloggers, an auction, a Star Trek Trivia Challenge, and a Lucky Draw, among other things.

You can tell us in advance if you're going to participate in any of the activities we've lined up for the day, when you register to attend the event. Just log in, and tick the relevant boxes.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'll try to answer as logically as possible.

Send eCards = Hotel Stay + Cash

Now that's a seemingly illogical equation that'll drive a Vulcan crazy!

But trust us, it does make sense. At least for a little contest we've set up on AllMalaysia.info. It's called E-mail It, Experience It! and you stand to win a hotel stay and some moolah to go with it.

All you need to do to put yourself in the running to win one of the prizes on offer is send ecards. Yep, it's that simple!

Sponsored by ING Malaysia, this one lets you choose your prize. And you don't even have to be an AMBP member, or a blogger for that matter. Heck, we don't even mind if you think you're a Romulan.

The contest starts on April 20, so look out for it.

More Contests

Have you sent in your entries to the two other contests that we're running at the moment. No? Really? What on Earth are you waiting for? Captain Kirk? Sheesh - go click, now!

Contest for AMBP Passengers + U2
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Ladies and Gentlemen, This is your Captain speaking.

On behalf of the flight crew, let me welcome you aboard the AMBP, heading for Bloggersville, Malaysia. We should've touched down ages ago but due to complications with the engine we're running on, things have not been going as planned. Someone's tinkering with the engine as we speak, so we're in OK hands. I think.

That is to say, we're heading somewhere and would *eventually* reach our destination. Even if it's as slow as a slug to a patch of salt.

Folks, we've just hit our cruising altitude and I've switched off the seatbelt light, so you're free to wander about while listening to me ramble on about a contest we're organising, just so you know you still have a pilot up here doing his best, trying to fly the plane, while shuttling back and forth, changing into his multiple uniforms...and hats. Yep, you've already met me, myself and I several times just now.

I demonstrated to you how to put on the lifejacket at the start of this flight, and took your lunch order, and even prepared the damn thing. Service above self, and all.

Anyway, back to the contest. We're running it in conjunction with the release of the in-flight movie Passengers, the story of which follows a young therapist (Anne Hathaway) assigned to counsel five survivors of a plane crash. Note that if this plane crashes, you'll probably get me as the therapist too. I'm no Anne Hathaway but I'm good at giving advice. Honest.

Winning this contest will entitle you and a friend to watch the movie for free. Otherwise you'll just have to fork out a couple of bucks (gasp!) or make do with this trailer.

And what is it you're required to do to win this contest? Well, all you'll need to do is sit back, relax and conjure up a caption for a photo taken from the movie and that's it! Naturally, you'll have to do this before we actually touch down. God knows when that is, but you can find futher details in our in-flight magazine.

For now I'll just leave you to your thoughts.

On behalf of your cockpit and cabin crew – me, me, and me - please, sit back and enjoy your trip. Oh, sh**e! Damn stick has come undone!

A Contest for U2, i.e Music CD Giveaway is back!

Irish superband U2 hasn't released an album since 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Until now that is.

Fans must be wondering if the boys from Dublin still have it in them to reach the heights of The Joshua Tree (that's my favourite U2 album, so there!), but hey, why don't you find out for yourself if they do, by winning yourself a copy of their latest studio album , their twelfth, No Line on the Horizon.

Thanks to Universal Music, we have 10 copies of the album to give away, with a U2 T-shirt each to go with them. Now, once again, how awesomely giving are we? ;-)

You know the drill:

1) Answer this question:
What's the name of U2's twelfth studio album? Is it a) No Buffet Line to Cut In b) No Line on the Horizon; or c) No Line, that damn streamyx ?

2) Post up this pic:

And

3) Write something - anything! - about U2.

...all on your blog. Then send the link to that particular blog post as a comment here.

Closing date is on April 27, 2009.

Next: Details on AMBP's 2009 Gathering at Studio V.

An update for the new year
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Good day all. Hope the new year has been good to you. It certainly has been a busy start for me. I didn't intend to mothball this site, but with one thing after another, well, you know how it is.

Anyway, I'm back after a period of holiday bliss, and the first thing I have to do, I suppose, is to tie up the loose ends from last year. We had an active period at the tail end of 2008 with charity events and contests and such, so I do owe you  reports, big thanks, and to some, prizes.

Splashing Charity Car Wash (Dec 13 & 14, 2008)

The charity event was a success as far as car/visitor turnouts and tickets sales are concerned, but we were a little disappointed by the lack of volunteers. We had a total of eight volunteers among AMBP members who showed up for the two-day event. That left us seriously short on numbers, but thankfully, we managed to get our colleagues, friends and family members to help out, and pulled through rather well in the end.

In total we managed to collect RM4500 from ticket sales. That's an estimated figure by the way, as I've yet to receive the final numbers from Hospis Malaysia. Will update this space when I get it.

As for the car wash itself, well, let's just say that it wasn't a walk in the park for the volunteers. It was more like a swim in the waterpark. Heh.

Still, both the volunteers and visitors had plenty of fun. Just about everybody got wet. There were tired but cheerful faces everywhere and while the weather threatened a number of times to spoil the party on both days, it didn't, and we came out of it with a wonderful sense of achievement.

My thanks to ALL the volunteers, whether you're a blogger, a representative of a sponsor, a Hospis Malaysia volunteer, a friend, family or colleague. You made this a success. You made the difference.

Oh, and don't forget to check out the Splashing Charity Car Wash Photo Gallery.

Project 'Gift a Kid' & visit to Rumah WAKE (Dec 20, 2008)

Besides the car wash, we had one other charity project called Project Gift a Kid, a joint initiative with the Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur.

The objective  of the project was to raise funds to buy back-to-school material for 100 underprivileged kids aged six to 15. Thanks to your efforts, we managed to raise enough funds (amounting to RM5793.75, as of Dec 25) to buy a 'full pack' each for 40 kids.

Each 'full pack' contained a pair of school uniforms (with socks and shoes), a school bag, some notebooks, a pencil box, and stationery (2B pencils, pens, eraser, ruler, scissors, glue, sharpener, pencil colours, highlighters and oil pastels).

The folks from Rotaract Club have handed over the items to the kids at Rumah WAKE and SJKT Cheras in time for the new school term. I made the Dec 20 trip to Rumah WAKE as well, and while we weren't encourage to take pictures of the kids, we did manage to capture a few shots of the home (view Photo Gallery), where the caretakers organised a little lunch do for us.

All and all, you could say we're very happy with how this one turned out. My sincerest gratitude and thanks go out to everyone who played a part in this project.

Help us help a kid go back to school
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Here’s a personal invitation to each and every AllMalaysian Bloggers Project (AMBP) member.

The AMBP is supporting the Rotaract Club of Kuala Lumpur (RACKL) in their efforts to raise funds to buy back-to-school material – books, stationery, uniforms etc - for underprivileged kids aged 6-15, and we’re going to require your help to do so.

The beneficiaries of Project Gift A Kid will be the children from Rumah WAKE 1, as well as those from Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan (Tamil) Cheras.

Now what is it that you can do, we hear you ask? Well, plenty.

Go tell it on the mountain  The project will benefit more kids if more people come forward as sponsors, and in order for that to happen, we’ll need to get the word out. The more people know about this project, the higher the likelihood that someone would act on it (y’know, percentages being percentages and all).

So, yes, we want you to help us spread the word. We want you to tell your friends, families, friends’ families, and family members’ friends. We want you to not only blog about Project Gift A Kid, but to shout it out on your blog!

Send a child a gift of movies! And what’s more? By blogging about this project, you’ll also send a kid to the movies (besides helping them get their back-school-material, that is).

How? Well, we’ve roped in the good folks from Universal International Pictures (UIP) who have agreed to sponsor a limited number of movie tickets, from which we’ll sponsor one kid to the movies for each blog entry written by AMBP members until all tickets are exhausted.

Win something for yourself too There’s also a chance for you to win yourself some awesome prizes courtesy of UIP and EMI if you add  BELOW your post on Project Gift A Kid your entry for the UIP Caption Contest.

Keen to know more? Well, mosey on over to the Project Gift a Kid pages.

Give a little bit, win a little bit
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.
As I mentioned in my last post, the AMBP is poised to have two charity-based events, one of which is already in motion and has been unimaginatively titled Splashing Charity Car Wash in aid of Hospis Malaysia which is well, a charity car wash organised to raise funds for Hospis Malaysia.

We called for volunteers for this little project but, alas, while the names are slowly trickling in (bless you dearies), it's coming in a little too slow for our liking, and it's a bit worrying.

See, to make this two-day charity drive work we're going to need at least 20 volunteers on each of the days concerned. And that's cutting it close. So, c'mon dear bloggers, register as a volunteer. It's the season of giving after all, so help us, well...give.

Stuff to win

Speaking of the spirit of giving, you've got to admit, the AMBP is very fond of giving you stuff. Or at least, we try our best to allow you to win stuff. Like say, this brand new competition we're running called BOLT Caption & SMS Contest. Yeah, we know, it's unimaginatively titled too. But the point is, we're trying our best to give you stuff.

"Stuff" like tickets to the very movie this contest is supposed to promote: BOLT. And also goodies from this Mouse House offering, like wristwatches and stamping sets and notebooks.

To know what you have to do to win these goodies, and to see images of the stuff you could end up winning, visit the BOLT Contest Page. Oh, and to entice you even further, here's the unofficial official trailer to the movie.

Cute, eh?

More stuff to win: Music CD Giveaway

"The Most Anticipated Rock Album of The Year!", screams the poster. It probably is, what with Axl and buddies taking their time - 17 years to be precise - to fine-tune Guns N' Roses's sixth studio album Chinese Democracy.

But was it worth the wait? Well, why don't you find out by winning yourself a copy.

We have five copies of the album in our safekeeping for you to take home. To add to that, we're also giving away ten consolation prizes in the form of GnR T-shirts.

Now, how awesomely giving are we? ;-)

You know the drill:

1) Answer this question:
What's the name of Guns N' Roses's sixth studio album? Is it a) Chinese Democracy; b) American Supremacy; or c) Malaysian Bureaucracy?

2) Post up this pic:

And

3) Write something - anything! - about Guns N' Roses.

...all on your blog. Then send the link to that particular blog post as a comment here. Closing date is on Dec 25, Christmas Day. Ho, ho, ho.

Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, or the day after that: Details on Project Gift A Kid.

Charity Car Wash + HSM3 CD Giveaway Winners List
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Good day bloggeroos and bloggerinos.

Remember when I wrote a post back in July, informing you that we were thinking of organising more charity-based events, asking you if you'd be interested to volunteer your time and energy for a good cause? Well, a number of you wrote back, saying that you'd be psyched if we actually went ahead and set up such an event.

Well, we're going to do just that and what's more, we're organising not one, but two such events, and just in time for the season of giving at that.

The first of these, is a two-day fundraising initiative called AMBP Splashing Charity Car Wash, in aid of Hospis Malaysia. It'll take place at a Kia Service Centre along Old Klang Road (Leo Auto Services) on Dec 13 and 14.

We'll be selling tickets prior to the event, the profits of which will make a real difference to the lives of those affected by life-limiting diseases/ailments. Each ticket is priced at RM20 and the bearer is entitled to the following services:

  • Car wash and vacuum on the above dates
  • A FREE 18 point inspection
  • FREE labour for cars that carry out Engine Oil & Oil Filter Replacement

Now, as a volunteer, you will be assigned to certain tasks on the day(s) in question, including getting your hands dirty (or rather, clean), washing cars.

For your time and effort, you will receive a goodie bag, and be eligible to enter the special Lucky Draw that we've cooked up. Light refreshments will also be provided.

One other way you can help is by getting the word out. Write about it on your blog. Tell your friends and family about it. Go stand in the middle of a busy shopping mall, get everyone's attention and announce it. Just don't get arrested on our account.

That said, do try your best to make it as a volunteer. Trust us, this will be fun. Just look at it as a gathering for bloggers, with lots and lots of soapy water.

For more details, check out the Splashing Charity Car Wash Day page.

Oh, as for the second charity event I mentioned earlier, you'll have to check back; I'll announce it in a day or two.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year CD Giveaway Winners

Good afternoon class. Some of you joined the High School Musical 3: Senior Year CD Giveaway a few weeks ago so what I want you to do now is go through the list below, and try to spot your blog name. If it's in the list... Congratulations! You've just won yourself the soundtrack to the movie HSM3: Senior Year:

You'll get to move it, move it
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

A quick note to inform those who took part in the Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Contest that we've sent out the invites by e-mail. Do check your inbox and if you receive an invitation, let us know if you'll be attending.

Once again, the screening starts at 9.30pm, Monday, Nov 10 at Cathay Cineplex Damansara (Hall 10). Note that tickets are numbered, and we're allowing you to choose your seats, so make like the early bird, and get the best wor, er, seats available.

For those who failed to get invites, don't fret; try your luck with the High School Musical 3: Senior Year CD Giveaway, or simply pamper yourself with good food and good company by attending the Red FM Love Classifieds event.

You'll get to move it, move it, if you win either one of the above too. ;-)

Oh, and here's something to get you in the mood:

Let's go to Madagascar. Let's go on a date.
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Remember the computer animated feature Madagascar? The one with the lion, the zebra, the hippo and Ross from TV's Friends?

Well, the filmmakers made a follow-up to the movie, and we've lined up a special screening of this very sequel Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, just so we and our you and your friends could watch it for free.

OK, sure. The first instalment wasn't exactly awarded with the Critic's Choice Award or anything, but it wasn't Shark Tale either. It had its moments, especially when the action focused on the tough-guy penguins and to a lesser extent, the lemurs.

What? You don't remember the penguins? This clip should jog your memory:

Heh. They're a riotous bunch, aren't they? Well, get reacquainted with the tuxedoed foursome by winning invites to our special screening.

How? Waddle on to our Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa page to find out!

In the name of love

Speaking of getting acquainted, here's an event set up for those of you who  want to expand your social circle just a little further. It's called Love Classifieds, and is organised by our sister company, Red FM.

The folks over at the radio station were kind enough to allocate some seats to the monthly gathering for AMBP members, so take this chance and go make new (or who knows, lifelong) friends.

It's a chance to meet and mingle with members of the opposite sex, in an environment that's fun and flirt-friendly.

Oh, and don't let the 'L' word scare you. This could easily be renamed into Friends Classifieds or Business Contacts Classifieds, or some such.

To get invited, answer a simple question on our Contest/Event page and wait for us to call you. It's gonna happen on 29 Nov 2008 (Saturday), at The Apartment, KLCC.

Go on then.

Go pink!…in a High School Musical!...while writing a novel!
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.

Websites (including blogs) went pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you did the same, good on ya!

If you didn't, it's not too late.

Do so today, and you might just end up as the proud owner of a Sony Ericsson w580i (pic below), thanks to the folks over at Wijaya International Medical Centre (WIMC) who’s organising the contest offering the cool feature-packed mobile phone as its main prize.

All you need to do is make the necessary changes on your blog, fill in the Entry Form and email it to pinkoctober@wbms.com.my. The contest, which offers five other surprise consolation prizes, closes on Nov 7, 2008.

Do bear in mind that the primary purpose of this web event isn't just to give your blog a more feminine hue. The hope is, that in addition to turning your blog pink, you'll read up on Breast Cancer, write about it, and share what you've learned through your blog.

You'll be on the right footing if you spread the word on an event organised by WIMC called It's Best to Test Carnival, a day that’ll be as fun as it is educational.

Back to School

It's been a while since we last held a Music CD Giveaway so here's one for the High School Musical fan(atic)s out there. Oh but first: did you know that Zac Efron - who plays Troy Bolton in the popular series – turned 21 on Oct 18?

If you did, then all I can say is...wow!. That's scary. And of course, that you MUST then enter this contest.

We have 10 copies of the soundtrack to High School Musical 3: Senior Year to give away, but to get your hands on one you’ll have to do the usual:

1) Answer this question: What's the name of the character played by Zac Efron in the High School Musical movie/TV series?

2) Post up this pic:

3) Write anything that comes to your mind about High School Musical.

...all on your blog. Then send the link to that particular blog post as a comment here. Ten best entries take home the CDs.

You've got until Nov 17 to complete the above tasks. Winners will be notified by e-mail.

Writing is fun. Attempting to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days is just plain crazy.

Calling all crazy people! The folks behind the Malaysian Nanowrimo is gathering soon. Soon as in this Saturday, Nov 1, 2008.

If you don't have a clue of what I'm talking about, then feel free to clickety-click to learn more about this gregarious creature called Nanowrimo.

Done?

OK. Now that we've established that this is one for the crazies, the next question would naturally be, are you mentally unsound too? Or would you like to go bonkers in 30 days? If you answered yes to either or both of the above, then read on...

Details of the 2008 Malaysian Nanowrimo Kickoff meetup are as follows:

Date: Nov 1, 2008 (Saturday)
Time: 10.30am onwards
Venue: Starbucks, The Gardens, Mid Valley

The first 15 to arrive will be in the running to win a book. All attendees are required to bring a sense of humour, two doses of fun, and loads of bulls*** to get them started.

We launched a travel tool, we went camping, we want to set you up on a date
Posted by Michael A Fredericks.
Evening, and all, and stuff.

It's been rather quiet around here, but that's because work has been a sod, and...yeah, work has been a sod.

Anyways, while you could hear a pin drop around these parts, a lot of noisy hammering and tinkering and pulling-of-hair sort of action have taken place, have been taking place and will probably take place again, which probably explains why my hair has decided to take a leaf from today's world economy book and is in steady recession.

In point form, what has happened, is happening, and is going to happen is, we:

We launched a travel tool

The most hair-loss inducing of the projects that we worked on this year has got to be the launch of the revamped AllMalaysia.info travel and info website, the ceremony of which was captured on video and summarised to a rather economical 1 minute 52 sec clip by our wonderfully supportive multimedia team:

I'm not sure if you can tell from the clip above but the new AllMalaysia.info now comes with a travel booking engine, and a spanking new programme called the Travel Ambassadors Programme, or TAP for short.

The AM Travel Tool is a nifty little feature which allows you to make bookings for flights, hotels, travel packages, transfers and car rentals on AllMalaysia.info, while TAP is our effort to get members of AMBP to play a more active role as a travel critic. At present, we're ironing out the travel package details with our sponsors/partners, so ambassadors, do keep your mobile phones all charged and ready; you'll soon get a call from us. If you don't, then just pretend we didn't call you. ;-)

And a note for all of you who applied - a big thank you, we've kept all your applications and may include more people in the programme in the near future, so your efforts could yet bear fruit. As for those whose mails did not reach us, I offer my sincerest apologies. We are aware of the nasty gremlins that have been playing havoc with our e-mail system (which was why you may have received numerous copies of the same mail), and are in the process of exterminating them. Just 1,347,221 more ugly critters to go.

We went camping

Thank goodness there were no gremlins on our little trip up north. The second trip of the Creating Sunway Memories with AMBP event, a 2D/1N excursion to the Sunway Lost World of Tambun was, for lack of a better word, brilliant.

There were cuts and bruises just about everywhere. Participants had to erect their own tents for the night. They were forced to walk ankle-deep through mud, or swim in bacteria-infested lakes. But at the end of the day everybody went home happy. One of the bloggers was heard saying that the trip was so much fun that he'd pay to come again. He said:

"The trip was so much fun, I'd pay to come again."

But seriously, the AMBP trip to Tambun was indeed a blast. After a dodgy start (late arrivals, stopped for driving over the speed limit etc), everything went as smooth as it could go, and it was largely thanks to the good folks over at Sunway Lost World of Tambun (who greeted us with an elaborate dance routine; see vid below), and the enthusiastic tour guide Mr. Tan of Mayflower (our sponsor for the very comfortable coach) that it worked out as well as it did.

The 31 adventurous souls certainly created some Sunway memories (one of which to do with tiger cubs; see vid below), and made some friends in the process.

But don't take my word for it, read theirs:

NOTE: I'll update this list as and when new postings appear

Oh, I almost forgot. We've got pictures from both the Creating Sunway Memories with AMBP trips, held in conjunction with the ongoing Sunway Memories photography contest. Just click on the relevant album on our Galleries page.

We're going to set you up on a date

This one is organised in the name of fun, fellowship and future possibilities. If you want to meet new people, make new friends or just want to have a fun day out, then you ought to check out Love Classifieds, a Red FM event organised for the singles community.

There's a number of seats allocated for AMBP members, so all you need to do is answer a simple question on the contest/event page and gather the courage to actually attend this speed dating bash which is going to take place on 25 Oct 2008 (Saturday), between 3 and 6pm, at Marché Restaurant, The Curve Damansara, Selangor.
